Decorative tiles have adorned the facades and interiors of ancient Persian temples, Islamic mosques, medieval castles and cottages, Victorian churches and shops. More recently, in the 19th century tile making was sporadic around Europe and in England was conspicuous for its absence. It was the 19th century gothic revival that led to a renewed interest in tile manufacturing later growing into a huge manufacturing enterprise. Many of the original Victorian fireplace tiles you see today were made in this period and many of the designs have been mass reproduced to copy original designs. Art Nouveau fireplace tiles became extremely popular in the last few decades of the 19th century as the Art Nouveau style became popular over Europe.
